Watch the Swinging Pentatonics online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Focus On: Western Swing

So many western swing melodies are built with the major pentatonic scale. It can be used as shortcut for connecting chord tones. I'll be adding some common color notes and passing tones to the pentatonic scale to make it more interesting. I've added the b3 and #5. You can use the scales two ways. You can just use the major pentatonic for the key and target the changes within it or you can play the corresponding pentatonic scales for each chord you're playing over. We'll review the modes with the passing tones and I'll show you an exercise for voice leading your scales together.
