The combination of open position and up-the-neck playing is one of my favorite aspects of Ry Cooder’s playing. You can get a great contrast between busier, more eighth-note driven licks down at the nut and more spacious, sustained single-note and double-stop slides up the neck. This tune also illustrates how you can move the closed-box position around to completely spell out various triads up the neck, as we take it from the IV to the I and then down to the V, all in closed position.
