In “King James” we looked at how the top two strings of standard tuning match the top two strings of open E tuning and saw how we could take advantage of this in the closed box position. “The Santa Monicat” illustrates how this can help us out down in open position as well, as we use hammer ons and pulloffs to and from the open strings to evoke Ry Cooder’s open position approach in open D tuning. And like Ry, we’ll also capo up to take advantage of that open position sound in a different key, in this case, F.
