Elmore James played in open D tuning, which is the same as open E tuning but down a whole step. Open E tuning has a B and E for the top two strings, just like standard tuning, so to get at some of those Elmore sounds we can start at the top of our closed-position box at the twelfth fret and then work our way down the second string to the 9th fret and the rest of the notes on the ninth fret on the third and fourth string.
