Watch the String Crossing online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Focus On: Standard Tuning Slide

Pick your spots wisely in standard tuning, and you can bring on a healthy dose of the overlapping chord tones that give open-tuned playing its fatness and characteristic sound. Right hand muting is key here; as you cross from one string to the next, you want to have enough control to let each note ring only as long as necessary, and cut off those you don’t want cleanly and efficiently. Unless you’re going for ragged and old-school, of course - and there’s definitely a place for that, too.
