Watch the Rests - Leaving Space online guitar lesson by David Santos from Focus On: Latin Bass

A rest is an interval of silence. It is sometimes referred to as a hole, a space, a pause, or a breath in the music, etc. Each type of rest shares a duration or length with a note. For every note length a corresponding rest exists (quarter rests, eighth rests, sixteenth rests, etc.). A quarter rest occupies the same amount of time as a quarter note, an eighth rest occupies the same amount of time as an eighth note, and so on. While the note would make a sound, the rest would create silence. Dotted rests are used in the same manner as dotted notes.
