You may approach a targeted chord "chromatically" by using a note or a series of notes called approach tones. Chromatic approach tones are half step oriented in nature and are not necessarily associated with the targeted chord or even the chord of the moment. Chromatic approach tones can offer a strong resolution to the targeted chord by establishing a sense of momentum and resolution. Chromatic approach tones can resolve from above or below the targeted chord. As a bass line descends, chromatic approach tones would resolve from above the targeted chord. As a bass line ascends, chromatic approach tones would resolve from below the targeted note.
