Watch the Pick Hand Technique online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Focus On: Funk Guitar

At this point you have a great start with the go-to sounds of funk rhythm guitar - m7, m9, dom7 and dom9 chords - as well as the foundational funk rhythmic tool: 16th notes. Now it's time to work on some basic playing-hand techniques starting with the pick hand. Using a simple three-note D7 voicing off the 5th string we'll go through various 1/8 and 16th note rhythms in Exs. 1 and 2 to get your ghost strokes going. From there you'll start percussively attacking the strings in Ex. 3 with a technique I call "scratches." Finally in Ex. 4 I'll hip you to the ultimate funk rhythm figure heard on countless funk classics - something I call the "funky hemiola."
