Watch the Riff Based Straight Blues online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Focus On: British Blues
I absolutely love a straight groove on a blues. To me Led Zeppelin was the king of this with tunes like "The Girl I Love Has Long Brown Wavy Hair" from the BBC sessions, "The Lemon Song," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Black Dog," "When The Levee Breaks," and more. This feel is where bands like Black Sabbath took their cue and found an essential feel for rock and roll. An interesting thing to note is that Page wasn't afraid to not only use power chords (chords with no 3rd) but full major triads as well. We can hear that right at the top of a tune like "Whole Lotta Love." Adding in the 3rd of the chord really brightens things up a bit and to me makes things a little more interesting. As you watch the video lesson, do me a favor and really nail the A chord embellishments I show you, I use them ALL the time and I think you will too.
