Let’s take things from the top and focus on the banjo roll introduction first. To pull this off smoothly and musically it will really help if you have spent some solid hours practicing the banjo roll techniques, slowly and accurately. The more comfortable you are smoothly playing a banjo roll variation with a simple progression of chords, the easier this part of the tune will be to play and expand upon. We will use a variation of a syncopated roll pattern with the right hand and combine that with some chord changes with the left hand using primarily chords on the top four strings. Practice letting all the notes sustain and ring together and for each note to be played cleanly and clearly. The next section of the song uses fingernail clicks and has a more distinct melody over the chord changes. Notice the use of the decoration and dynamics we discussed like sliding into a note or chord, experimenting with muting, volume and attack variations. The piece ends with a nice harp harmonic run resolving back to the root.
