There is a dramatic difference between simply playing a note and really expressing it. To avoid songs sounding too similar or monotone you can use dynamics and tone variations to make your playing further come to life. Now that you have a vocabulary of right and left hand techniques, it’s time to make them more expressive and unique by adding dynamics. Some topics to focus on in this field will be volume control, hand position, finger angle, playing with or without a pick and fingernails, overall attack and muting. It’s going to take time and practice to get good at all these different skills, choose one at a time and experiment with it over and over again.
As a result of more careful thought and attention to the right hand dynamics it’s also a good time to pay attention to tone. Tone can be described in many ways, such as the pitch, quality, strength, warmth, brightness or color. You’ll find that your tone and dynamics are usually intertwined. Take your time and really try a number of different approaches and sounds you could produce at any given moment. You might find that right hand dynamics and tone are key elements in making your music more alive, original and unique.
