Watch the Band of Jimi online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Essentials: Solo Electric Blues
Band of Jimi has as much about what you don't play as much as it does with what you do play. It's important to leave space on this one. Let that low D ring out and do the work for you. Take the sound in and let it ride, that can be quite dramatic musically. Plus, strats sound awesome tuned down. I would always tune down a half step if everyone else would, I think it just sounds better, so did Jimi btw! Scale wise I am mainly sticking to a Dm blues scale (DFGAbAC). I am also using a bit of delay and univibe to add some more mojo to the sound. They aren't necessary, but they sure do sound good.
