Watch the The Rev online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Essentials: Solo Electric Blues

I know it can be difficult, but do yourself a favor and crank your amp and play. It doesn't have to be deafening, just loud enough that you create a sonic circuit with the instrument. Notes sustain longer as the amp compressed, overdrive sounds better, feedback can happen, and many other great things like inspiration. Part of the reason someone like Hendrix could do what he did was because he was loud! Things become easier to play. I can bet that almost all of the great guitar sounds we all love come from an amp that is being pushed hard. It could be a 5 watt Fender champ, an 18 watt Marshall, 45 Watt Super Reverb, or a 100 watt Super Lead. The common thread is that they all sound best when we turn them up! Obviously I am talking about tube amps here folks! There are some great modeling options around, but they aren't the same. If you play, you owe it to yourself.
