Watch the Open D Tuning online guitar lesson by Vicki Genfan from Essentials: Open Tunings

This tuning was one of my earliest. I think I might have heard it in Joni Mitchell’s ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ as a teenager. While the open strings give you a simple D major chord, which works beautifully with a slide, there are enough rich, lush chords to be found with only a couple of chord shapes to play tons of songs and give them that little something extra.
My song, ‘Carry Me Home’ uses this tuning and takes advantage of the 12th and 7th fret harmonics. In the piece I've written here, I’ve highlighted the simple beauty of this tuning starting out with a basic Travis picking pattern. Then, keeping the same chords we go into a strumming pattern that incorporates a very simple body percussion technique.

See if you can come up with some other kinds of percussive embellishments! Feel free to change the strum around.
