Watch the D min 7 Tuning online guitar lesson by Vicki Genfan from Essentials: Open Tunings
I originally came up with this tuning while searching for something to harmonically complement the electric guitar riff (in standard tuning) in the Doobie Brother’s song, ‘Long Train Running’. One of the things that made this tuning a keeper for me is the magnificent voicing for a Gm9 chord I found early on using the open strings 1, 2 & 3. As if that weren’t enough, I then found a stunning bunch of notes in the 7th fret harmonics that became part of the riff I used for the second verse of that song. In fact, I’ve used both of those musical gems in the reggae inspired etude that I composed for you here!
Just for fun, see if you can find chords in the key of G major hidden somewhere in this tuning! (G-C-D-Am-Em)
