Watch the C sus 2 Tuning online guitar lesson by Vicki Genfan from Essentials: Open Tunings

(*Naming: This one could also be called C add 2 for the same reasons as D sus 2.) One of my oldest friends.

Again - here we are without a 3rd. But we have the added 2nd. Leaves us feeling a bit unresolved, like a non-committal cloud floating aimlessly across a blue sky perhaps? In my composition, 'New Grass' I completely take advantage of that feeling in the intro where I’m riffing (slapping and tapping) on a variation of a pentatonic scale, but never letting a 3rd sneak in there. It builds tension.

The diatonic chords in this tuning are easy to play right up the fretboard and you can let the top 3 strings do their drone-ring thing as you go. It’s a great sound. There are also a lot of easy to reach chords in first position.

In this etude, I’ve taken a commonly used power chord concept and overlaid it into the tuning. Then we stretch out into some easy to play, lush voicings for an ultra pop sound.

Songs I’ve used this tuning in: Don’t Give Up, New Grass (Up Close & Personal), One by One (not yet recorded as of this date).
