I can’t say it enough: when you’re working in the steady-bass style, make sure you know where the constant, quarter-note bass notes belong first. Then start placing the melody notes over them, phrase by phrase, always paying attention to which notes are pinched, or played on the strong beats with the bass, and which notes fall in between, on the offbeats. Melody notes, or those played with the fingers, are always going to be one or the other: played with the thumb, or played in between two thumb notes.
