This groove is a straight on rocker right off the top, the intro building up by adding in the guitar, bass, and drums separately to add excitement. Note how effective it is when we take the main riff up an octave to bring the excitement up another level. For the verse, we bring it way down and palm mute, making sure we keep the intensity high, pushing the volume again when we get to the V7 chord.
It was fun to revisit Ten Years After again, I hadn't listened to them in a while and I was happy to hear I still love it. Alvin Lee passed away not too long ago but has left a body of great work and playing. Check him out if you have not done so already, and "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" is an excellent place to start, and oh yeah, be sure to listen to one of the live versions!
