Watch the Blues Blood
online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Essentials: Blues Rock Grooves Vol. 1

This one is pretty straightforward performance-wise, so let me talk about the inspiration for the second half of the tune. One of my favorite glam rock bands, and probably one of the most famous ones, was T. Rex. The tune I'm channeling here is the classic "Get It On (Bang A Gong)," where I play the low E string followed by the top two strings as a nice rhythmic stab. The leader of T. Rex was a guitarist/singer named Marc Bolin, and although "Get It On" was their biggest hit, I'm sure you are familiar "Jeepster" and "20th Century Boy" (which was used in a car commercial a few years back). Marc's flamboyant style often garnered comparisons to his contemporary David Bowie, and interestingly enough they were both produced by the same man, Tony Visconti.

Glam rock started in England in the early 70's and was usually accompanied by androgynous looking band members, platform shoes, glitter, and feather boas. But what I really like about Bolan was his songwriting and his guitar playing, all of his tunes have a great groove and understanding of the blues. If you're not familiar with his work I highly recommend you check it out, it's just great party style rock 'n' roll.
