It's important to give chords corresponding numbers as a system of analysis. For example, a blues is a I7-IV7-V7 chord progression. This is the way musicians speak to each other when discussing a song. This way it makes the song easily transposable to any key.

The changes on this blues are I-I7-IV-#IVo7-I-VI7-II7-V7-I-IV-I-V+. The number system takes some work, but as you can see, it's much easier to run that down than saying the names of each chord. It may not seem that way at first, but believe me it is! Of course, it requires that you know the sharps and flats for each key signature, but you do really want to know that anyway...
