Watch the Minor Sea online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Essentials: Advanced Blues Rhythm
As you can see in the video, I use a lot of hybrid picking. Getting into this was a big deal for my playing. I would normally not use my pick and fingers, which I still do sometimes, but I highly suggest becoming competent at least at hybrid picking. Generally speaking, my lower notes in these cases will be played with the pick, and the other strings with my middle finger and ring finger on my pick hand.
At the top of the video, I discuss what I call a roll, where I quickly sound each of the strings individually. I really like the sound, as it reminds me of a piano where I can quickly arpeggiate the chords. It sounds very different if you do the same thing with the pick itself.
