Jim contributed the guitar history entry to the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz and has written articles for Guitar Player, Jazztimes, Classical Guitar and other international periodicals. He penned the liner notes for the boxed set Wes Montgomery: The Complete Riverside Recordings. Jim holds a master of fine arts in music from Mills College and divides his time between freelance writing, composing, college music instruction, and jazz and classical guitar performance.
