Watch the Jazz Grid Exercise online guitar lesson by Danny Gottlieb from Master Class Drum Lessons
This exercise uses the basic jazz beat to play through all eight eighth note possibilities. It is a great way to work on independence, and to develop basic comping skills
1. Each eighth note should be practiced and played with the ride cymbal, with close attention payed to the placement and accuracy of the left hand.
1. Start slowly and make sure each rhythm is accurate. Make sure swing rhythm feels authentic and not stiff
2. Increase tempo when comfortable with control and musicality
3. Play grid on bass drum, after mastered with left hand
