Watch the Southern Swing online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from 30 Country Jazz Licks You MUST Know
Did every great guitarist go through Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys? Well...yeah kinda. Sheldon Bennett spent a brief time in Bob Wills' band. He also played guitar, fiddle, and sang in Hank Penny’s band. He was a disciple of George Barnes but with a stronger focus on chord melody. Sheldon’s playing ended up influencing Roy Lanham who was instantly attracted to the chord melody approach. He put out one record called Swingin’ Southern Guitar. This lick is from his cover of "Sweet Georgia Brown". I picked this lick because I love the way he sets up a pattern using thirds and walks it down through the arpeggio. Instead of just using a D7 arpeggio, he adds the 9th to the pattern to jazz it up a bit.
