Watch the Country Train Beat Solo online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Essentials: Country Soloing Styles

I start the solo with a syncopated idea using the A major pentatonic and then anticipate the change to E with a common banjo lick. The next phrase over E is a descending cascading lick that uses open strings into the IV chord. Over the A, I use triads and hybrid picking to outline extensions of A7 ending with a pedal steel lick. Then, we chicken pick our way down the E Mixolydian scale using the interval of 6ths.

Finally, we get to our turnaround. I use the same concept of embellishing a minor 3rd interval for the D and A chord. I pop the top note with my middle finger and pick the bottom note sliding it down a half step and back up to the chord tone. The last idea is a chicken picking double stop lick inspired by James Burton over E.
