Watch the Outlining Chords online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Rockabilly Survival Guide: Lead
Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt were the first wave of guitar heroes. These are the guys that all of our young budding rockabilly guitar slingers were listening to as they were growing up. They were informing much of their improvisational instincts. Guitarists often focus too much of their time on scales rather than embellishing arpeggios. Traditional jazz improvisation is more about embellishing chord tones and the melody of the tune rather than playing modally. We going to look at some common chord shapes and discuss three simple ways to embellish and connect them other shapes. We'll use half step approaches, diatonic approaches and chromatic passing tones.
