Watch the Travis Picking online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Rockabilly Survival Guide: Lead
Travis picking is easily the most identifiable techniques in rockabilly. It's born out of stride piano. You keep a steady alternating bass line on the bottom three string while playing melody on the top three strings. Travis picking can be used as rhythm for supporting a song or it can be used for lead. When using Travis picking for lead as we are doing here we will be using major inversions with simple embellishment and limiting yourself to the top four strings. This will insure that it cuts through a band and sounds like a solo rather than a rhythm guitar part.
