Substitutions are a great way to add depth to an otherwise simple progression. They're also helpful for adding movement when we have hang out on one chord for awhile. As soloists we can imply substitutions without the rhythm section playing them. There are a handful of common and extremely useful substitutions that will immediately add new color to your solos. We will discuss where to place augmented 7th, tritone substitutions, V of Vs, the iv, diminished one and the diminished three chord.
