Watch the By The Sea online guitar lesson by Ladd Smith from Modern Nashville Guitar
We're covering more melodic 4th Interval slides, hammer-ons, some of my favorite Reggie Young inspired licks, some bends and of-course I'm always using the hybrid picking technique. I mention the Merle Haggard song "That's the Way Love Goes" which Reggie Young played a lot of runs I emulated on this piece. I talk about using only two fingers to slide up and down the neck in order to have a nice smooth sound on those harmonized horizontal scales, I learned that trick from Bill 'The Bear' Middleton a long time ago, Bill played on the Opry for years. Another thing I'd like to mention is that frequency wise, this style and tone works very well against Gut-String/Spanish/Classical acoustic guitar, someone like the incredibly talented Biff Watson will usually be in there playing arpeggiated rhythm or contrary-motion/counter-point lead lines. Regarding Reggie (wow, that sounds like part of the new fall line-up on NBC), another good song to check out if you really want to hear a sampling of how awesome Reggie Young is on the guitar, is "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. That famous intro and all of that guitar work was recorded by Reggie at Quad Studios right here in Nashville.
