Watch the Outrun The Train online guitar lesson by Ladd Smith from Modern Nashville Guitar

Speaking of Billy Byrd and western swing/jazz inspired licks, this is one of the finest ones I've ever found out of a descending E Minor-Seventh. I mention Leon Rhodes, Leon is the main guy who took Billy Byrd's place in Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours. Leon went on to be one of the staff guitarists on the Grand Ole Opry for years and years. He's incredible on the Tele, was one of the very first guys to have the Mini-Humbucker in the neck position, and he had a 3rd middle pickup put in his Tele years before even Pete Townshend (The Who). All this fast Danny Gatton type western swing stuff, Jimmy Bryant and Leon Rhodes both innovated so much of it, though we no longer have Jimmy, Leon can still hang with the best of them.
