Watch the Outrun The Train online guitar lesson by Ladd Smith from Modern Nashville Guitar

Now we talk about the first of these two alternate licks that we use in the chorus (the chorus comes around twice). I talk a lot about moving 3rd's and flat 7th's in this Chicken Pickin' type style. I also mention Billy Byrd, he was one of the original Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours. They were the first band in any genre to ever travel in a tour bus to do their shows (they did hundreds of shows a year and were constantly gone). Billy had his own special sound. He was an incredible Jazz player heavily influenced by Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt but he played 3-chord country songs for a living. Check out Ernest Tubb to hear Billy's incredible phrasing and commercial tone of the time. He heavily influenced and mentored session greats Harold Bradley (co-founder of Music Row) and Hank Garland (check them both out too!).
