Watch the Outrun The Train online guitar lesson by Ladd Smith from Modern Nashville Guitar

One of the first things I get into is talking about these dual note horizontal scales. These are so important to get a good grasp of for slow and pretty arrangements. I talk about growing up around a lot of Pedal-Steel guitarists who have such a unique approach to their pick phrasings and volume swells which we'll get into later. And here comes the Jerry Reed influence with the off-the-wall open strings mixed with high descending notes that sort of gallop down the fretboard. Also I talk about when you're descending or ascending and you're not entirely sure you're going to come back 'in the pocket' or on the down beat, you can add little hiccups, or ghost notes in there to help you come back into frame. This all happens extremely quickly though and this again is where the muscle memory from the consistent repetition will save you.
