Watch the Pedal Steel: Study 2 online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Country Guitar Survival Guide: Lead Edition
For our second instrumental study we're going to add the volume swells which are a huge part of the pedal steel sound. I'll be doing this with the volume knob on my guitar. On telecasters this is easy enough to do but it can be out of reach on other guitars, in which case any volume pedal will do. Same sound, but lets face it using the knob looks cooler and it's one less thing to take to a gig.
One of the other techniques I'm adding are artificial harmonics. This will instantly transpose any fretted note up an octave with a bell like tone. Don't be discouraged by these bends. You will need to develop more hand strength for these than you've probably needed in the past. Be patient and make sure that you are bending in tune. Only then would I suggest adding in volume swells.
