Watch the Flat Picking: Study 1 online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Country Guitar Survival Guide: Lead Edition
Flat picking is an important technique for a guitarist playing any style. This example is inspired by bluegrass pickers. Bluegrass is an incredible sub-genre of country music. I'll be showing you some cliché flat pickin' licks that are good jumping off point for making your own. The most important part of this section though is learning how to pick out of the CAGED system. This means I'm visualizing the very common C-A-G-E-D chord shapes to embellish with single note runs. In this first section I've chosen just two licks to play over each chord shape so you can start to understand the CAGED system. In the second instrumental we'll get a little more adventurous with our licks and patterns.
