Watch the Establishing Rhythmic Patterns online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Country Guitar Survival Guide: Rhythm

Nothing identifies a tune more than a rhythm guitar hook. It's the thing that can tie the whole rhythm section together. This could be a riff like in Walyon Jennings's "Ramblin' Man" or chord embellishment like in Merle Haggard's "Workin' Man Blues". A rhythmic pattern can be going on all the time or just bookending phrases. I'll show you a couple ways to work a rhythm pattern into a progression and how to always be aware of how it's relating to the vocal.
