Watch the Marty's Arps online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from 50 Country Masters Licks You MUST Know
These arpeggios come from Marty Stuart’s instrumental, Humminbirdd, off of the Ghost Sessions records. I love Marty Stuart’s guitar playing, singing, song-writing, mondolin playing...you name it. I think he’s one of the great talents of country music. He is an incredible mandolin player and flatpicker, as well as a really great telecaster player, and has one of the greatest bands around right now. He has turned his back on modern country and is actually playing classic country music and making some great records along with Kenny Vaughan. In this instrumental, Marty is moving arpeggio shapes around over one chord to bring out a chords extensions. So if he is on a I chord he will drop it down a whole step and this lets him get the flat 7th and 9th of a chord. He will also use the IV-of to bring in the gospel sound. He is able to mix all these little substitutions around into this nice little descending arpeggiated guitar lick.
