Watch the Nichols and Dimes online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from 50 Country Masters Licks You MUST Know
This is a Roy Nichols lick, from his solo on Merle Haggard’s "Working Man Blues". It was taken from Merle's Okie From Muskogee record. This solo has just come to be one of those solos that every country guitar player knows. There are some quirky things in here that are very Roy Nichols and have influenced a lot of guitar players. One of them is how he plays over the IV chord. Out of a triad shape he lets the bottom note pedal, or stay remain unchanged, pulling off chord tones above it. This creates a really cool tension.
