Watch the Saint James online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from 50 Country Masters Licks You MUST Know
This one comes to us from the great James Burton. James Burton is really the godfather of chicken pickin'. He’s the guy who sort of gave us that sound and created a lot of the clichés for us to work off of within that sound. Now he has a way of playing that really lends itself well to chicken pickin, he plays very thin strings and he plays with a thumb pick and banjo finger picks. So when he does a lot of these chicken pickin double stops, they cut right through a mix because they are really bright and chime-y. I realize not all of us are going to play like this, using thumb picks and these fingers picks, so we’re never going to get it to sound exactly like James unless we’re using these finger picks. Actually even then we’re never going to sound exactly like James, since no one can truly sound like someone else. But we can take his licks and ideas and apply them to our own playing. And his way of chicken pickin through double stops and these bend-releases has become a huge part of chicken pickin guitar and has influenced many licks to come. This lick can be heard on Emmylou Harris’ version of Ooh Las Vegas.
