This is a Scruggs style banjo lick. I think pretty early on guitarists started copying banjo players, because why not? It’s an amazing sounding instrument and we all had banjo envy after hearing Earl Scruggs play. Any guitarist who has heard Earl Scruggs play the banjo would want to try to emulate three finger approach on guitar. Jerry Reed is definitely a player who took this kind of banjo-style picking and rolls and adapted it really well to guitar. You could later hear those influences from more modern players like Brent Mason.
