Watch the Giddy Up Chester online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from 50 Country Masters Licks You MUST Know

This is a Chet Atkins trick, where Chet uses a forward roll over three strings, and on the upbeat he comes across to play the middle string. It’s a great way to fill up a lot of sound and it creates sort of a dreamy effect. One of the things that makes this so cool is that he’ll alternate that middle string between a fretted note and an open string. So this is a key-sensitive trick because you have to make sure that the open note is going to fit over the chord. The way Chet does it is by making sure that that open string is an extension of the chord. He commonly uses the open strings as a 9th, 6th or dom 7th.
