Watch the Tárrega Exercise #7 online guitar lesson by Andrew Leonard from Beginner Method for Classical Guitar

Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) is one of the great masters of the classical guitar. He lived in Spain and his performances, compositions and teaching led to the development of modern day classical guitar playing.

Some of his most well know compositions are: "Capricho Árabe", "Recuerdos de la Alhambra", "Adelita" and "Lágrima". These pieces are mentioned in the video, but I want to spell them for you in case you decide to do an internet search, so you can hear them.

Also mentioned in the video is Tárrega's involvement in the development of the development of the modern day classical guitar. When Tárrega was young, he acquired a guitar built by the Spanish luthier Antonio Torres (1817-1892). The guitars Torres built are the same size or scale of today's instruments. His guitars are considered some of the greatest guitars ever made. The interior bracing and other elements are studied by current makers and sometimes even copied. This is what has been done when a classical guitar is listed as "Torres style".

One last fun fact about Antonio Torres: In 2007, a guitar he built in 1864 and owned by Tárrega, was auctioned by Christie's. It sold for $157,000!
