Watch the Lost in Bass online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Chord Studies: Slash Chords Vol. 2
This is a common groove with a little beat of a Motown feel. You start with a D/E, and to get the low E bass note you can either strum or you can hybrid pick but make sure you mute the fifth string. If you're playing with a band that has a bass player, you may want to omit the low E to keep things from getting muddy. Roll your third finger and have your first and second fingers in position for the A / E. Then you go back to the D/E and move up a whole step to E.
