To begin this progression with start off with an ambiguous sounding Dsus2. Then, we bring our first finger over to get the F note on the sixth string, but make sure you're deadening that fifth string. On the C 6/9 you have the option of deadening the fourth string, because the idea behind this progression is having the treble strings ring as pedal tones with the bass moving beneath it.
