Watch the En Garde online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from Chord Studies: Evolving Triads Vol. 1

In this example were going to drop down to the lower register and play our voicings on the third, fourth and fifth strings. The first chord is a first inversion A triad, which comes right out of the G form of the CAGED system. Then you raise the third finger over to the fourth string and raise the note on the fifth string to get the D chord. When you play this chord, be on guard about not muting the fourth string with your pinky. Arch the fingers to facilitate these kinds of shapes. Then we move down and play two measures of our E chord, which of course is derived from our E form.
