Watch the Next Door Neighbor online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons
I really like this solo. It incorporates so many fantastic little nuanced ideas that make up a great solo. The tweaking of the flat third is a key element to this and everything else Billy Gibbons plays and is all over this solo. You also noticed I used some staccato phrasing on this as well - this adds a nice juxtaposition to the more legato phrases. The solo also contains a nice big minor third bend followed by some tricky fingering playing fourths out of the minor pentatonic scale. Once you learn this solo, please take a look at the original solo on the tune "Neighbor Neighbor" as Billy's take is fantastic. There is a great live version of the tune from the early 1970's that you can hear on YouTube as a bootleg. The sound quality is painfully bad, but the guitar playing is stellar. Nor also mention part of what makes ZZ Top such a great band is the rhythm section of Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, who does not have a beard.
