Watch the Super Bad! online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons
Thanks to modern technology I was able to reverse the phase on the rhythm guitar part in "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" and heard this very cool rhythm guitar part that is usually buried in the mix. I had no idea this super funky 16th note rhythm was being played at all. Very cool! Here we can see Billy taking a page out of the James Brown text book. In the previous two licks we were mainly playing a steady 1/8 note rhythm with the right hand, this time we double up that rhythm to play steady 1/16th notes. Billy does this at the second part of the solo section to help build excitement. The trick here is to keep a loose wrist to provide the smooth funky rhythm, a stiff wrist = no funk. We can't live without the funk.
