Watch the Billy The Kid online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

Well this lick is fairly well laid out in the video so let's talk about Billy's love of the guitar and guitarists. Billy is somewhat of a historian on the blues and apart from playing with Hendrix, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Freddie King to name a few, he is one of the keepers of the flame of the blues. His playing draws on Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Jimmie Reed, to Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, and beyond. I have heard him talk about keeping an eye on the newer players in the genre like Gary Clark Jr. and others. I feel as he does, the importance of knowing the musical history of the music you are playing by going back to the roots. I was introduced to the blues through guys lick Billy, Hendrix, and Clapton. I'd read the credits on a Led Zepelin record (yes record) and wonder who Willie Dixon and Memphis Minnie were (after Zep was forced to give them credit). I had the great opportunity to bump into Robert Plant at a record store in NYC and speak with him for a minute as he was buying an old Howlin' Wolf recording on vinyl. I am fortunate to have met a number of my heroes, but Robert Plant was a special day. He shares the passion for the blues that Billy does, and I do as well. I believe it informs my playing to know the history of the players.
