Watch the BFG Rake online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

This lick was inspired by Mr. Gibbons playing on the classic minor blues "Blue Jeans Blues" from the 'Fandango' record. This tune is essential listening for any blues and blues rock guitar player. Not only is Billy's playing at its peak on this track, it's an excellent example of his fine use of dynamics and phrasing. Never playing too much, and never playing too little! The included background track is a complete minor blues that I put on here for you to have fun with. Please listen to the original recording and jam along with that. Then play along with the background track and try to come up with your own ideas. One thing that I find helps me improve as a player is what I call creative visualization. If I want to play like Billy Gibbons for example, I think about Billy Gibbons on the whole and to a certain extent try to take on his persona a little bit, if only in my head. He is a consummate rockstar, guitar player and cool guy. Just like Hendrix, part of what makes him such a great player is his coolness factor. Sometimes I try to tap into this and I find it works for me. Give it a shot, it's fun!
