Watch the Hombre Malo online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

I remember being completely mystified as to what was Billy was doing in the beginning of the solo section of "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" years ago when I first transcribed it - ( you should be transcribing you know… ) I had no idea how he was playing this lick because it was not sounding right when I was just using my pick - especially playing those alternating octaves on the C note. I don't remember who pointed out that it was hybrid picking, but that was one of those moments that changed the course of my guitar playing, and this was one of the licks that helped me get it together. The chord progression moves between C7 and F7 and outlines both of those chords nicely. It's funny, while watching the video myself I see I am sometimes inconsistent on how I hybrid pick the very first part of the lick, sorry about that! Where the hybrid picking really comes into play is when I bounce between the octaves of the C note in the second measure. When we get to the F7 chord in measure three we use the hybrid picking using the pick, middle finger and ring finger. Definitely spend a lot of time on this particular section of the lick as we will see it again as we move forward.
