Watch the Hello Neighbor online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons
If you are not familiar with ZZ Top's first record called "ZZ Top's First Record", please do so immediately. Many of us really know Billy's playing from the very popular stuff during the 80's with all the MTV videos. My favorite music from the band is from the 70's and this record was released in 1971. They have been around a long time! What is so striking about Billy's playing on this record is how mature it is for someone of his age at that time and his tone is huge. When I grew up my only real exposure to ZZ Top was the MTV stuff and maybe "La Grange" and "Cheap Sunglasses". I remember a friend of mine telling me to check out the earlier stuff and I was blown away. It's one of my favorite things when I get to introduce my students to early ZZ Top and the reaction is always the same - "Wow!" On that note, make sure you get the versions of the first 6 records with the original drum tracks. Somehwere in the 90's I believe they remastered the recordings and replaced the drums with "bigger" drums and in my mind, and now the band's mind, killed the vibe. The latest reissues have the original tracks.
